Artist Statement

Both the creation and use of handmade objects are an integral part of my everyday life. As a potter, I am able to share this love with others and, together, reflect on the beauty of living with these objects. My work is a tool of tactile communication, relaying the drama of its creation and the energy of its maker. As a frequent hiker and rock climber, I often witness the subtle beauty of nature, and stone, in particular. Using simple, earthy materials, I bring these experiences into my pots.

Currently, my work resides within the realm of functionality because I enjoy the combination of creativity and practicality. I am able to explore and revisit traditional forms which resulted from basic human necessities, and have become the objects of daily human ritual. A particular form can suddenly become intriguing, almost an obsession, while others recede to the background. One constant in my work is the theme of movement, because it reflects life at the potter's wheel. Asymmetry, natural colors, whimsy and spontaneity are also recurring ideas which reflect on my experiences and personality.

My most recent work centers around a progression of the basket, platter, and large vase forms. Through contact with many potters and other types of artists, I have built a repertoire of techniques which serve the creation of my style of ware. Often, incorporating a new technique in clay construction will inspire a collection of pots in a certain direction. In this case, I have taken the insight to create rings, slabs, and sections, and explored only some of the endless possibilities. My thrown works include the loose texture indicative of the wheel, and my hand-built works have a unique, stone-like texture from organic materials in the clay. These works test the definition of function, with their rough surfaces, quirky legs, and prominent handles; yet they seem to agree to remain within its limits.
